Rope, Flash, and Rock Wall

Mixed media on fabric

2024

Rope, Flash, and Rock Wall is a mixed media painting made on found fabric, developed through close attention to the material’s existing surface. The artist employs different methods to build texture—layering, abrasion, and staining—allowing the fabric’s fibers, marks, and irregularities to actively shape the image. Rather than starting with a fixed composition, forms emerge gradually through this material dialogue. The work recalls the logic of early artefacts and cave paintings, where images appear to grow out of the wall itself. The title was assigned only after completion, naming associations that surfaced through the process.

Reflection, Loose Soil, and Puddle is a mixed media work on found fabric, developed through material-driven processes such as bleaching, tearing, sewing, and layering to create texture and pattern. Painted on both sides, the fabric remains semi-transparent, allowing light to pass through and shift perception. The work is suspended within a raw, triangular wooden frame resembling a campfire structure. When natural wind enters through windows or doors, the painting gently rotates within the frame, introducing subtle movement. The work hovers between reflection and movement, surface and depth, image and ground, shaped by both material intervention and surroundings.

Maze, Soft Body, and Way Out is a two-sided mixed media painting on found fabric, framed using a method inspired by the way Thangka paintings are traditionally stretched and held during the painting process. The fabric’s original grid pattern remains visible as a structural base, over which the artist introduces organic forms through painting and bleaching, partially dissolving the surface into translucency. On the reverse side, hot glue is applied along the grid edges, forming irregular connections that echo the painted surface. The work stages a tension between order and fluidity, system and softness, containment and passage.
